Texas leads nation in entrepreneurial business startups

Among large states, Texas is the nation’s leader in entrepreneurial business startups, according to a new report from a respected research firm.

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation is a nonprofit organization that measures entrepreneurship across the U.S. Each year, the foundation publishes the Kauffman Index rankings, which are measurements of entrepreneurial activity across the U.S.

“Rather than focusing on inputs, the Kauffman Index focuses primarily on entrepreneurial outputs—the actual results of entrepreneurial activity, such as new companies, business density and growth rates,” the foundation’s website states.

According to the 2016 Kauffman Index, which was released this month, Texas leads the nation’s large states in business startup activity.

“For the twenty-five largest states in the country, Texas was top in startup activity, followed by Florida, California, New York, and Colorado,” the foundation said in its report on state trends.

Texas’s Kauffman Index this year was 1.30. Florida’s Kauffman Index was 1.01, California’s was 0.95, New York’s was 0.73, and Colorado’s was 0.69.

Texas’s top ranking among large states is an improvement over last year, when the Lone Star State placed third on the rankings.
